A building, including a church, that has three "conches," i.e., semicircular niches surmounted by halfdomes, on three sides. Theophilos (q.v.), for example, built a triconch audience hall in the Great Palace (q.v.) that had an imperial throne in the central (eastern) apse. In 1303 Stefan Urosh II Milutin (q.v.) rebuilt the katholikon at Hilandar monastery on Mount Athos (q.v.) as a triconch church. A tetraconch (q.v.) has four conches.
